There are basics to any kind of business venture, and doing business online is no different. There are four important basics everyone must have to be successful. These basics are essential for your success.
A Web Presence
You need to be on the web to do business on the web. So figure out if you want a website or a blog. This is your hub of activity and base of operations. You cannot build an online business without being online… simple, right?
If you are just starting out, I suggest you start where I started, with a Site Build It! site. SBI is more than just hosting and website building capabilities. It is a comprehensive plan to build a high-traffic Theme-Based-Content-Site.

If you are more interested in starting an Authority Blog (like the one you’re on now), I suggest you look into Authority Site Center. That is what I did, and I can tell you the training is EXCELLENT!
A Way To Communicate With Subscribers And Customers
You need an email service that lets you send out emails to your lists and set up unlimited autoresponders so you can build a relationship with your subscribers and customers.
You cannot build an Internet business without this capability. I use Aweber because they have the highest delivery rate in the business.
(If you go the SBI route, they have an autoresponder included… so you’re set.)
Targeted Traffic
You’re dead in the water without potential customers coming to your site who are interested in what you are selling or promoting. And quite frankly, once your online business is set up… most of your time should be spent generating targeted traffic.
Here are some of my favorite methods:
- Posting To Forums. (Here is a free ebook on Forum Marketing)
- Commenting On Blogs. (I use this free tool to make it easier: Comment Sniper)
- Article Marketing. (This is the article distribution service I use)
- Free Reports. (Here’s an ebook I wrote on how to write free reports)
- Social Marketing. (This is the best place to learn social marketing)
Monetization
This means HOW you are going to make money on the Internet. Basically, once you have a web presence, a way to communicate with subscribers and customers and targeted traffic… you need something for your visitors to do that makes you money. And there are hundreds of ways.
But I’m going to concentrate on 2:
- Selling your own products. Don’t get frightened… it’s easier than you think. My favorite product to sell is small 7-15 page, high-quality, small reports. You can create your very own, EXCLUSIVE product to sell in as little as a week (or less depending on your writing skills).

- Selling other people’s products. Affiliate marketing is an excellent way to monetize your website or blog. Make informed recommendations based on personal experience and collect a commission if your recommendation results in a sale. While it sounds simple, there really is an art to it.

I know this sounds very simplistic… and it is. But if you want to make money online you must master each of these basics. Plus, every time you work on your Internet business, you should be working on one of these 4 sections: web presence, communication, targeted traffic and monetization. They are essential to making money online.
