I recently read somewhere (I forgot where… sorry), that 40% of Americans try to go into business for themselves at some point in their lives. That’s MILLIONS of people pursuing the dream of being their own boss and working for themselves. Sadly, most fail.
Fortunately…
Now it is easier and cheaper than ever to start your own money making business and work for yourselves… on the Internet. I’ve done both. I started my own restaurant business… which failed and took my life’s savings with it. And I started my own online business and succeeded, at a FRACTION of the cost of setting up a business in the real world.
So, if you’re one of the 40% who are thinking about starting your own business and working for yourselves… my advice is to start on the Internet.
But before you even get started, there are some questions you have to answer:
What Are My Goals?
Do you just want to make some extra money with your online business? Or, do you want your Internet business to be your main source of income?
You need to figure out what you want from the beginning so you can plan your business to achieve your goals. Too often, new Internet marketers have unrealistic goals and spend their time doing online activities that will never accomplish their goals. This leads to frustration and failure.
So, figure out your goals first, so you can plan for success.
What Are The Basics I Must Learn?
In any business, there are basics you must learn. These are the essentials that EVERY online business must master to be successful. If you don’t learn these basics, you are either not building a real business, or are building on that will fail.
There are 4 essential basics every new Internet Marketer must master:
- Web Presence
- Communication With Subscribers And Customers
- Targeted Traffic
- Monetization

What Type Of Internet Business Will I Build?
There are hundreds, if not thousands of ways to make money online. Some ways are better than others. Some make more than others. And some ways take longer to see results than others.
In my opinion, you should concentrate on an Internet Business plan that concentrates on either selling your own products, selling other people’s products as an affiliate or a combination of the both. I believe this is the fastest way to make a living online.

What Is The Plan?
One of the biggest challenges beginner Internet marketers have is figuring out what to do to make their business succeed. Many have come from a background of being an employee where someone else told them what to do every day. Now they are faced with the situation where THEY must decide what to do day in and day out to build, grow and profit from their online business.
Many new to online business spend most of their time trying to figure out what to do. This means they are NOT spending any time DOING what needs to be done.

How Much Time Do I Have To Work On My Online Business?
Most new Internet Marketers start out part-time. They have other jobs and want to start on the Internet either to supplement their income, or some day replace it so they can quit their jobs. Either way, time is limited.
Others jump in feet first. (This is what I did because I NEEDED to make money online). While I wouldn’t suggest this approach… I feel the NEED I had to make money online gave me determination and perseverance that would not allow me to quit when things go tough.
Either way, determine how much time you have and adjust your goals, business model, plans and expectations to match. Creating a successful online business does not happen overnight.
How Much Will It Cost?
While starting an online business is drastically less expensive than starting a real world business, there are still costs involved. Trying to do everything for free, or learn everything for free is a lot of work. You time is better spent DOING what needs to be done.
Determine what you need. Get it. Learn it. Use it. And then move on.
I started my first online business for $299 a YEAR, by getting an SBI site. Then I got my own hosting and autoresponder to have more flexibility. Then I joined membership sites like List & Traffic, Super Affiliates, Social Power Linking and Authority Site Center when I needed and could afford it.
So, figure out how much it is going to cost to get started. Then add to your tools and training when you need it to further grow your business. You WILL spend money, just make sure to spend it wisely.
When Will I Start?
I know a lot of people who are thinking about starting an Internet business. They are in the learning and planning stage. Good idea. Learn and plan as much as possible in the beginning.
But…
Don’t fall into the “paralysis by analysis” trap. It is easy to resist starting because you still feel there is something to learn. You want to “guarantee” your success before you start. And as a result, you NEVER get started.
Building, growing and profiting from an Internet business is a process. At some point you just have to get started. The best way to learn is to learn by DOING.
